MID-ATLANTIC N.A.M.E. SCHOLARSHIP AWARD ANNOUNCED

Congratulations to our
Mid-Atlantic N.A.M.E.
2011 Scholarship Winner!

Andrew Scott Kinomoto

The 2011 Alex Busick Scholarship Award in the amount of $5,000 has been awarded to Andrew Scott Kinomoto of Bothell, WA who attends Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC.

A native of Seattle, WA, Andrew grew up in a beautiful environment full of inspiration and opportunity. He graduated from Inglemoor High School (class of 2007) where his creative talents were fostered through the support of his parents and guidance of his first graphic design teacher, Judy DeFord.

As a Graphic Design major and Composite Speech minor at Bob Jones University, he has served on the Collegian campus newspaper as Design Editor. Active in numerous art and design competitions, he was a finalist in the Mazda Design Challenge, featured in the annual BJU Mid-Year and Commencement Contests, and most recently the recipient of a Silver Student ADDY.

Each year Mid Atlantic’s Scholarship committee develops a creative assignment to give college students a chance to design an ad or campaign around important subjects in their everyday lives. This year’s creative assignment was on Educating Students About the Potential Dangers of Social Networking Sites When Job Hunting. Some past assignments have included Cigarette Smoking, Teen Suicide, Habitat for Humanity, Road Rage, Red Cross, Big Brother/Big Sisters, Importance of Voting, Dangers of Texting While Driving and Dangerous Over-consumption of Alcohol.

The Mid-Atlantic N.A.M.E. Scholarship Foundation, Inc. was formed in February 1977, and provides financial assistance to qualified students majoring in advertising, with an expressed interest in newspaper advertising, at a recognized college or university in the Mid-Atlantic region. Mid-Atlantic N.A.M.E. named the scholarship award after Alex Busick who passed away in April 1997. Busick was an honorary life member of the association and advertising manager for Lowe’s Companies for a number of years. Due to Alex Busick’s dedication & inspiration to the youth in newspaper advertising, the foundation board voted unanimously at that time to name the scholarship award in his memory.

At the beginning of each school year, the Scholarship Foundation committee mails information to each of the colleges and universities in the six states which the association membership represents (NC, SC, TN, GA, VA, W VA). Students must complete an application, write a statement using 200-500 words telling the judges about themselves and why they are interested in an advertising career, and then create a newspaper advertisement or campaign for that year’s assignment to meet a client’s objective.
